BPO in Jamaica Records Speedy Growth in Fiscal 2017-18

The industry has employed more than 26,000 people across the island, and service providers – including Conduent, Sutherland Global, Alorica, and Hinduja Global Services – have gone on expanding.

The BPO industry is growing at a commendable pace in Jamaica, with the sector accounting for 58% of new jobs generated in the last financial year.

The industry has employed more than 26,000 people across the island, and service providers – including Conduent, Sutherland Global, Alorica, and Hinduja Global Services – have gone on expanding, according to Jamaican minister Daryl Vaz.

Addressing the audience at the recently concluded Jamaica Investment Forum, the minister said more than 60 companies on the island are offering call center and other BPO services.

“Newcomers, Ibex Global Services and National Credit Adjusters, have also established themselves firmly in the BPO space and are already planning expansions over the short to medium-term.” Vaz added.

The formation of the IT-BPO taskforce and appointment of a national BPO coordinator will go a long way in boosting the island’s outsourcing industry.

The taskforce has been tasked with improving Jamaica’s readiness for BPO investments, in addition to overseeing the implementation and updating of a BPO industry development work plan, while the coordinator is charged with introducing strategies to boost local and foreign investments in the sector.

“We are also moving to strengthen the enabling environment for the sector, including the policy and legislative framework, labour market enhancement, infrastructure development and market penetration.”

Meanwhile, he informed that the Development Bank of Jamaica has so far disbursed over US$56.7 million to the BPO sector, which is 78% of the US$73 million the bank allocated to the sector.
